Introducing Tranchant Mountain
Nestled in the enchanting Lanaudière landscape, Montagne du Tranchant is a must for climbing enthusiasts in Quebec. In summer, it's renowned as a must for rock climbing, but it's also an ideal spot for ice climbing in winter. With its majestic, accessible walls, this site offers a unique experience, combining sport and breathtaking nature. Here's some information to help you prepare for your next adventure there.
Location and access
Montagne du Tranchant is located near the village of Saint-Côme, in the Lanaudière region. To get there, follow Route 347 west from Saint-Côme. After about 6 km, turn right onto Chemin du Lac Clair. Drive a further 1.5 km and you'll reach the official parking lot, perfectly signposted for visitors. Find out more here.
For those looking to optimize their logistics, the parking lot is quite large and fairly close to the main climbing areas. There are toilets and garbage cans available in the car park, so don't forget to use them.
Access requires a subscription or daily membership to the FQME.

History of the area's development
The history of Montagne du Tranchant is relatively recent. It was in 2003 that Jean-Claude Néolet, a passionate climber, discovered this cliff and opened the first routes. Initially prized for rock climbing, the area quickly revealed its immense potential for ice climbing in winter 2004.
Since then, the site has become one of the most popular in Quebec for winter climbing. Its development has accelerated thanks to collaboration between local climbers and organizations such as the FQME (Fédération Québécoise de la Montagne et de l'Escalade). Several new routes have been added, catering for different levels of experience, making it a destination of choice for beginners and experts alike.
Characteristics of ice climbing sites
Montagne du Tranchant offers a unique experience for ice climbing enthusiasts. But before you strap on your crampons, let's find out what makes this site so special, by exploring the types of routes, the infrastructure in place and the ideal time to venture out.

Types of routes and levels of difficulty
Whatever your level, you'll find a route to suit your experience at Montagne du Tranchant. It is possible to install moulinettes directly from the top, without the need for a lead, on most routes.
Most routes are rated 3 or 3+, but there are a few 2 or 4. A 70 m rope is recommended, as the routes are usually between 30 and 35 m long, some even 45/50 m.
Each route changes according to the winter weather; check local updates before each ascent for current conditions.

Infrastructure and safety
Safety and preparation are essential to get the most out of ice climbing. At Montagne du Tranchant, a good infrastructure is in place:
- Anchoring Most anchorages can be made on trees at the top of tracks. Be careful to choose the right tree, as some are not big enough or rooted well enough to receive a relay.
- Helmets must be worn It may seem elementary, but the helmet protects you from falling ice and unexpected impacts.
And don't forget to avoid routes undergoing maintenance or marked as dangerous. To find out which sectors are open or require specific precautions, visit the FQME.

Seasonality and best periods
When should you plan your ascent of Montagne du Tranchant? Optimum conditions are highly dependent on the seasons and the weather.
- Winter period (mid-December to March) The best time for perfectly formed, solid ice. Cold days and freezing nights guarantee well-frozen walls.
- Ideal temperatures Between -5°C and -20°C, conditions are the most stable. Thawing periods can make ice less reliable.
- In the spring Avoid this area, as the ice will certainly not be good enough, as the wall is very sunny and the ice melts quickly.
It's always worth checking weather forecasts and local reports before you go. You can read more about the best periods in this detailed article on ice climbing in Quebec.
Practical tips for planning your visit
Between choosing the right equipment, respecting safety instructions and getting information from reliable resources, every detail counts for a successful outing. Follow these tips for an unforgettable experience.

Equipment required
I consider you to be autonomous in ice climbing before you set out on your own to tackle ice walls. But it's always good to be reminded of the importance of equipment. Here are the essentials:
- Bootsmountaineering: opt for well-insulated boots compatible with automatic crampons.
- Crampons : Look for models with front tips suitable for vertical surfaces.
- Ice axes Ice axes: Choose classic ice climbing ice axes, as walking ice axes are often ill-suited to vertical ice climbing like the one you'll find at Montagne du Tranchant.
- Clothing The layering principle. Choose an under-layer, an insulating mid-layer and a waterproof windproof jacket. Warm gloves are also essential.
- Headset Helmets are mandatory on site. The ice can be very brittle, so it's really important to wear one at all times.
- Ice screw/spindle If you want to make a lead, ice screws will be your best ally. But even for Moulinette, it's always useful to have one or two screws, to make a redirection for example.
- Additional equipment Harnesses, belay systems, rappel systems, personal anchors, belays...
In short, quality equipment is your best ally for climbing with confidence and comfort.

Safety considerations
Did you know that ice climbing entails specific risks, such as falling boulders and unraveling ice? Don't leave anything to chance. Here are a few precautions to take:
- Helmet mandatory Every climber must wear a helmet. It protects not only against falls, but also against potentially dangerous shards of ice.
- Track inspection Always check the condition of the ice before starting. Cracks or color variations indicate instability.
- Weather conditions Plan your outing on days of constant frost to ensure that the ice is solid and safe.
Serious preparation is the key to enjoying this unique activity without compromising safety.
My opinion of the Ice Climb at Montagne du Tranchant
I knew Mont Tranchant for rock climbing, and it's already a great place for that. But this was my discovery of the ice climbing there. The site is very accessible, the approach walk quick and well marked, so there's little chance of getting lost.
We went to the area on the left side of the wall. There were few people, two other groups, and lots of possible routes to climb. JD did a first lead line to set up a belay, although it's possible to go around to set up from the top. We stayed on this first wall and did three different routes before going to another wall on the left for a final route.

We were there on January 12, and the temperature was rather mild, around -5 degrees, and with the sun it wasn't cold. The cliff's orientation means that it's in the sun almost all the time, which has an impact on the ice, which becomes rather soft as the day progresses. But it also means that the belayers don't get too cold. As soon as the sun goes down, the temperature starts to drop.
I recommend the place at 100 % for beginners or more advanced climbers. It's a great place to climb, and its sunny exposure makes it a prime spot even on the coolest days.
Conclusion
Tranchant Mountain embodies the spirit of winter climbing in Quebec: raw beauty, exciting challenges and a passionate community.
Whether you're a first-timer or looking for technical lines, this destination has something for everyone. Get your crampons ready, follow your instincts and let yourself be carried away by the call of the ice.

Bonus :
The community and environmental management
Montagne du Tranchant is more than just spectacular rock faces and pristine nature. It is also the result of an impressive collective effort, in which local management and environmental ethics play a key role.
Involvement of local clubs
Have you ever wondered who makes all this adventure possible? Behind the icy peaks of Montagne du Tranchant, there are enthusiasts united by a common love of climbing and nature conservation. Two entities in particular stand out: the Club d'Escalade de Lanaudière and the FQME (Fédération Québécoise de la Montagne et de l'Escalade).
Visit Club d'Escalade de Lanaudière works tirelessly to maintain the site's infrastructure, organize events and encourage the local community to get involved. Their mission? To make the site safe and accessible to all. From laying new paths to maintaining old ones, their efforts are invaluable. You can find out more about their initiatives and events on their official page.
As for the FQMEIts role extends beyond the region. This organization coordinates best practices for all climbing sites in Quebec, including Saint-Côme. Regular inspections, volunteer support and educational campaigns are just some of the tools they use to ensure quality experiences. See their dedicated Facebook group to keep up to date with site maintenance.
Together, these two community pillars ensure that every climber enjoys a well-managed, harmonious environment. Don't hesitate to support them or contact them if you have any questions.
Ethical practices and respect for the environment
Climbing is often a great adventure that brings us a lot of pleasure and memories. But what happens to the beauty of the place if we don't protect it? Thank you for helping to protect it.
Here are a few essential practices to preserve this space:
- Bring back your waste : It can be tempting to leave something behind... but every piece of waste, even biodegradable, damages the natural balance. Why not take a little extra bag with you to carry your garbage home?
- Respect neighbouring properties La Montagne is surrounded by private land. Harmonious relations with local residents are crucial for climbers' access.
Certain principles, such as Leave No Traceare particularly well-suited to ice climbing. If you'd like to explore these ideas further, this article on climbing ethics provides excellent advice.
