Ouest canadien 2021: Journal de bord jour 1

Covid is still here. Who could have predicted it? Since our adventures in the GalapagosAfter a long and rocky journey home, we only traveled in Quebec. Fortunately, our province has many beautiful things to offer us. Today, it's time for us to get back on the plane - we're staying in Canada, to discover the Rockies!

We've always dreamed of visiting Banff National Park, where we watch the Quebec edition of its film festival every year. Now that the restrictions between the provinces have been lifted, we're off to discover the Canadian Rockies.

So off we go to the Montreal airport around 4pm to catch our flight to Calgary. We check in our luggage and head for security. There, we discover the longest line we've ever seen at Pierre Eliott Trudeau. With the Covid measures, they have to take the temperature of all travellers, and this slows the process down a little. Still, it goes pretty quickly, and we're on the other side after about 45 minutes.

Since we're flying domestically, there are no duty-free stores, and fewer places to browse while waiting for our flight. We knew we'd have to pay for our in-flight meal, so we ended up at the Archibald microbrewery for our evening meal. It was far too expensive for the quality. But having good seats and being able to take off the mask while waiting for our flight was priceless.

Nachos Archibald, expensive and not so good.

As boarding time approaches, we head for our gate. Unfortunately, the flight is delayed by 20 minutes... which turns into just over an hour.

We end up taking off in a westerly direction (with the added bonus of a long sunset, as we followed it all the way).

A beautiful sunset that followed us for most of the flight

We arrive at the Calgary airport at around 10:45pm, collect our luggage fairly quickly and set off in search of the shuttle that's supposed to take us to our hotel right next to the airport. Unable to find where to take it, I try to call the hotel, but no one picks up. No time to lose, we want to sleep, especially as the next day we have to leave early to pick up the car and make the 6-hour drive to Hinton. So we take a cab to the hotel.

Once we've got our rooms back, it's already past midnight and we're off to bed for a well-deserved sleep.
